CHANEL NEXUS HALL, Tokyo, Japan, February 7 - March 31, 2024
Gabrielle ‘Coco’ Chanel and George Hoyningen-Huene first met in Paris in the early 1920s and he described her as ‘a brilliant woman’ with a deep understanding of ‘the modern woman’s needs and likes’. His carefully crafted photographs for fashion magazines captured the brilliance of Chanel’s designs, from chic monochromatic suits to relaxed beachwear and lavish evening gowns. Today, these graceful fantasies transcend the printed page and transport us to a bygone era of elegance.
This special exhibition is a collaboration between Chanel Nexus Hall and The George Hoyningen-Huene Estate Archives. The exhibition celebrates the connections between two icons of twentieth-century style and is the first major display of Hoyningen-Huene’s work in Japan. Both Gabrielle Chanel and George Hoyningen-Huene were arbiters of taste who reached the pinnacle of their chosen careers and both will continue to inspire artistry for generations to come.
