Cary Grant, published in Vanity Fair, November 1934
The article reads: Although he has been acting in America, off and on, since the days of the old Hippodrome, it was not until Mae West looked at him from under her eyelids, murmured throatily, ". . . warm, dark and handsome . . ." and sighed, that Cary Grant really began to reap his just rewards from the public. This was in She Done Him Wrong, as no one should have to be told. He was also Miss West's leading man in her second picture; and he is now firmly established as something for ladies to sigh over. His new picture is Enter Madame, with Elissa Landi.

“Texture, line, simplicity – these were the things he liked – the classic truth. He was a really cultivated man and sufficiently knowledgeable to have faith in his own opinion.”

A portrait of George Hoyningen-Huene in the Vogue Studio, by Walter Lichtenstein (né Limot), 1934.
Born on this day in 1900, Huene became the chief photographer at Vogue Paris in the late 1920s and contributed thousands of images to the magazine over the next decade. In this portrait he leans nonchalantly against the large format camera and holds his newest Vogue cover, 1 February 1934. Behind him we glimpse a backdrop of Grecian masks, a vast enlargement one of his still-life studies which was used for several glamorous shoots in 1934.

George Hoyningen-Huene’s Ciro-Flex twin lens reflex film camera in its brown leather pouch. The camera was made in Delaware, Ohio, and is fitted with the original Wollensak Anastigmat lens and Rapax shutter.
He was an early adopter of twin lens reflex cameras. More lightweight and portable than the large cameras he was accustomed to in the studios of Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar, cameras like this one accompanied Huene on his extensive travels around the world.

George Hoyningen-Huene’s photographs first appeared in Vogue in 1926, though the magazine’s first photographic cover wasn’t printed until 1932.
This spectacular rainbow cover design by the Spanish illustrator Eduardo Benito dates from September 1926, and is followed by some of Hoyningen-Huene’s very earliest professional photos…

Another Hollywood hero, Ernst Lubitsch (1892-1947) was known as one of the most talented film-makers of his generation. His movies were described as ‘At once elegant and ribald, sophisticated and earthy, urbane and bemused, frivolous yet profound.’
